Slip! Slap! Slop!

April is a great time to reinforce the importance of protecting your child's skin and your own from the sun to prevent skin cancer. While skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, it is the most preventable, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

  • Slip on a t-shirt: A t-shirt over a bathing suit or other sleeveless shirt is a great way to help block some of the sun's rays
  • Slap on a hat & sunglasses: A brimmed hat and sunglasses help protect the face and eyes.
  • Slop on sunscreen: Apply SPF 15 or higher sunscreen before going outside, and reapply at least every two hours, even if it is cloudy.

For more information, contact your school nurse or visit http://www.cancer.gov/

April 2011 Letter from Principal Jen Price - No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirement

April 15, 2011

Dear Parent or Guardian:

In accordance with the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirement, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) issues a school “report card” each year.  It contains important information about teacher qualifications, student achievement on Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) tests, and the progress we are making toward helping all students become proficient in English language arts and mathematics.   You can view the report cards for both the school and the district by clicking the links below:

Ticks and Lyme Disease

Lyme Disease is an illness that can cause flu-like symptoms, sore joints, and chronic heart and nervous system problems. It is diagnosed in people of all ages, including children. Lyme Disease is endemic throughout Massachusetts, meaning it’s not something you get just on Cape Cod. You can get it from a tick acquired in your own backyard.

Lyme Disease is transmitted through the bite of a deer tick. Deer ticks range in size from a poppy seed to a sesame seed. They are most active during the warmer months, but can infect people at any time of year. They cling to vegetation, but cannot jump. Most are found in brushy, grassy or wooded habitats.

To prevent Lyme Disease, use a bug repellant with DEET or permethrin according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30 percent or less on older children. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, and camping gear. They should not be applied to skin.

Financial Update

Newton South PTSO requested a matching donation to GELF in the sum of $1000.00.  The NNHS PTSO agreed on $1000.00 for this academic year.  Rather than having a predetermined annual amount, the PTSO will decide each year, the GELF donation. The amount will be listed under MISC in the PTSO budget.  GELF relies on funding thru a few different avenues: personal donations, benefits from   3 high school concerts, and a GELF dinner will be hosted on March 26, 2011 at the Neighborhood Club in West Newton. Tickets are $125 pp and can be purchased thru Newton Schools Foundation’s website or via mail to NSF.  Finally, students not requiring GELF assistance who participate in a High School travel program pay an additional $50.00 which funds the GELF scholarships

The PTSO received the gift of $1000.00 from the Class of 2010.

Celebration has raised $1097.00 to date

Newton North's Registration Day is on Wednesday, March 16

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As you are hopefully aware, Newton North's Registration Day is on Wednesday, March 16.  In preparation for this day, students were given a course registration worksheet with pertinent information in homeroom on March 1.  Students can access the Opportunities Book that includes course descriptions and additional  information regarding graduation requirements, and school policies and procedures on Newton North's website

Between March 1 and March 11, teachers are having conversations with their students about what courses students would like to take next year.  The teachers will enter in course recommendations electronically into our system (SMS) up through Friday, March 11.

On Registration Day, students will receive a formal pre-printed registration card with the course recommendations already on it.  Students will follow a special schedule and be able to speak with their teachers to confirm their course requests or make any necessary changes.

Could your child benefit from an adult mentor?

Could your child benefit from an adult mentor?  Project MENTOR, a program of The Newton Partnership and the John M Barry Boys & Girls Club, matches 4th-8th grade students with trained and screened adult mentors in order to build caring and consistent relationships.  Children and their mentors are able to spend quality time together doing activities they both enjoy and having fun!  Mentors will be specifically trained in the dynamics of bullying, in order to work with children who have found themselves in a recent bullying incident (as a target, aggressor, or both).  Please call Haley Rosenblom-Stein at 617.559.9074 or email at haley_rosenbloom@newton.k12.ma.us for more information or to begin the application process for your child.
