METCO's 50th year in Newton celebrated on April 29

Newton Public Schools commemorated 50 years of partnership with METCO, the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity, Inc., on Saturday, April 29, at Newton North. Mayor Warren kicked off the evening and welcomed more than 200 people to the event. Maricel Sheets, director of the METCO program, hosted the speaking program during which the following awards were presented:

  • Legacy Award - Dr. Katherine Jones, founding director, Newton METCO program
  • Legislative Champion - State Representative Kay Kahn
  • Alumni Excellence - Jeffry Alkins ('11), Tahira Wilson-Guillermo ('74), Jermel Wright ('14)

Superintendent David Fleishman thanked families for coming to celebrate this important partnership that has enriched the lives of so many Newton students.
