Professor and former governor Michael Dukakis speaks about public service on December 18

Several hundred students were treated to a talk about public service by Michael Dukakis, professor at Northeastern University and former governor of Massachusetts. The special event was planned by the Center for Civic Engagement and Service as part of the Dan Fahey speaker series.

Here are a few quotes from the talk.

  • Public service is about making the world a better place.
  • We need good people everywhere--state, local, national. It is essential to get good young people actively involved.
  • Plan to live moderately. If you want to make a lot of money, don’t go into public service.
  • There is nothing more important than your personal integrity. Don’t accept anything of value [from people trying to influence you]. Your personal integrity is absolutely critical. Get your kicks from being in public service. The rewards are extraordinary!

Professor Dukakis invited students interested in public service to email him at m.dukakis@northeastern.edu.

The Dan Fahey speaker series is an ongoing lecture series which brings speakers on government, leadership and civic engagement to Newton North. It was established in memory of Dan Fahey, a longtime Newton resident who was very involved in the city's civic life and is administered by the Newton North Center for Civic Engagement and Service.
