Candidate showcases and ballot issue debate to be held October 22

Join Newton’s four Neighborhood Area Councils--Newton Highlands, Newton Upper Falls, Newtonville and Waban--for a pre-election event at Angier School. Come to one portion or stay for all three.

1:00 p.m. Moderated one-hour discussion between Ruthanne Fuller and Scott Lennon, candidates for Newton’s next mayor. This session will be moderated by Marjorie Arons-Barron, Waban resident and distinguished print and broadcast journalist.

Newton Free Library has teens and families covered in October

Make Your Own Comic Book Series, four Wednesdays--October 18 and 25 and November 1 and 8, 6:30 p.m., second floor Teen Area: In this series of workshops we'll learn about comic book drawing, story telling, structure, paneling and more! Each meeting will focus on a different part of the creative process, and by the end you'll have a comic book of your own! This is a four-part series and we ask that you try to commit to coming to all four! Register online. Grades 7-12

Girls Who Build workshop to be hosted by LigerBots on October 17, 6:30 p.m.

Newton girls ages 13-18 are invited to a hands-on workshop with LigerBots, the Newton North and Newton South FIRST Robotics Team, on October 17, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., in the Newton South High School wood shop, room 9271. Find out what happens when YOU pick up a screwdriver! Join in the excitement of solving engineering problems along with other girls in a low-pressure environment! Please wear close-toed shoes. Center for Civic Engagement and Service offers volunteer opportunities for students

Is your student looking for a new experience this year? The Center for Civic Engagement and Service can connect your student with a wide range of volunteer opportunities at one of the many community organizations in Newton and the surrounding area. The Center is located in Room 125A (near the Art room) and is open Tuesday through Thursday during lunch periods, and on Monday and Thursday during X-Blocks.  Parent/guardian volunteers are available to help students to identify opportunities that align with their interests and goals.
