After School Program supports struggling students

The After School Program is designed for students in need of additional academic support. Although the overwhelming majority of participants are in 9th grade, the program also includes 10th and 11th graders who may be struggling. Newton North staff oversee small groups of students, supporting them with homework completion, test/quiz preparation, time management, and organization. The program takes place twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays, after school from 3:00-4:15 p.m. Staff communicate with parents/guardians and classroom teachers.

Educational Excellence money funds books for teachers

Newton North has used money raised in the 2014 Educational Excellence campaign (focused on social and emotional learning and mental health) to purchase 20 books by Jessica Minahan. Ms. Minahan provided training this fall for teachers and staff on working with students who experience anxiety. The books include book plates acknowledging support from Educational Excellence. Here are some comments from appreciative teachers and staff.

  • Many Thank Yous!!
  • This is awesome!!
  • It'll be so helpful!!

City of Newton seeks residents for boards and commissions

Newton residents participate in local government as members of more than fifty boards, commissions, committees, and advisory councils serving the City. Such broad citizen involvement helps our government remain open and responsive. Residents play a critical role in the work required to address the wide variety of needs in our city.

Appointments to the City’s boards and commissions are made most frequently by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council, but some are made directly by the City Council or the School Committee.
