Something about prom and graduation season that makes rational parents go bonkers

There’s something about prom and graduation season that makes rational parents go bonkers.  Here are 6 tips for parents to help keep their teen safe and make this season one to remember for all the right reasons.

Set curfews— Teen car crashes and deaths increase exponentially late at night. If you decide to extend curfews, do not allow large blocks of time that are unaccounted for. Know where your teen is, how long he will be there, when he will be leaving, who is there, and who is supervising the event. In 2008, half of teen deaths from motor vehicle crashes occurred between 3pm and midnight and 56% occurred on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Feedback on the Just Think

Feedback on the Just Think: Teens Making Smart Choices week has been consistently positive. Comments include the following:

"WOW!!! What a week! The turnout for the Expo was phenomenal! The adult evenings with the "Breaking Free From Depression" video and panel discussions and the "Promise to Adam" presentation were moving and educational for all in attendance. Thanks to everyone involved for making this week one that students were really shown the resources out there. It should be evident to many that we are a community who cares for our kids."

"I hope that this is just the beginning and we can keep up the momentum."

Teen Safety to be Focus of Week-long Program at Newton High Schools

Helping Newton teenagers address myriad health and safety issues—from risky behaviors like underage drinking and distracted driving to other concerns like stress and bullying—is the focus of a week-long series of events at both Newton high schools beginning on April 4. Newton North and South PTSOs are working with local community groups to bring together teens, parents, guardians, teachers, and clergy for Just Think: Teens Making Smart Choices.

The week will include assemblies for students only and two evenings designed for parents and other community members. “Breaking Free from Depression,” a video and panel discussion, will be presented at Newton South on Tuesday, April 5, at 7:00 p.m. Remarks by Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone, Jr., and “A Promise to Adam” with Barbara Spivak and Howard London, parents of car-accident victim Adam London, and Claire Masinton, will take place at Newton North on Thursday, April 7, at 7:00 p.m. Small-group discussions will follow.
