The Newton Youth Commission has launched a new resource called ECHUG, a free, confidential, anonymous, and research-based online alcohol abuse prevention/intervention tool for Newton area high school teens, parents, school personnel, private clinicians, etc. This very short survey tool (used at over 500 colleges/universities across the country and adapted for high school use) is available at www.newtonechug.com and takes only five minutes to complete. It provides Newton teens with instant, detailed, personalized, and non-judgmental feedback about their alcohol use.
Tested and recommended by students at Newton North/South who participate as interns in the Mayor's office, this tool is incredibly informative, is a tool that teens actually will want to use, is available free 24/7, and can serve as a great launching point for conversations between parents and teens. Chris Fortunato is a member of the Youth Commission's advisory board and is the Dean of Students at the Harvard Kennedy School. He has worked with Newton teens for more than 15 years as a teen director and currently as a private teen life coach. Ruth Hoshino is the School Nurse Leader and staff person to the Youth Commission for the Newton Health and Human Services Department and has worked with Newton youth in the school health program for 10 years.

7:30 – 8:00: Join us to learn from a Newton North librarian what services the library offers for 9th , 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Find out what's in the library collection, what online resources are available, and how your students use the library.
8:00 – 9:00: Stay for an informal parent-to-parent discussion after the library overview. Chat and hear other perspectives.
Parents/guardians of students in ALL grades are welcome, and new parents are urged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
You have no doubt heard about the book Zeitoun by David Eggers, which both Newton South and Newton North high schools are reading as part of the Two Schools, One Book project this summer. This program is being coordinated by the English Departments at Newton North and Newton South, with the help of the respective schools’ PTSOs and parent coordinators Anne Swager and Claudia Wu at North and Julie Sall at South.
We are writing to let you know that there are a number of ways for parents and the school community to be involved in this curriculum-based project. On the day of the event, which will take place in mid-October, students will be attending panel and story-share discussions that will be based on some of the issues raised in the book. Panel discussions will include general topics relating to Religion in America, the Ecology of Disaster, the role of Arts and Culture in New Orleans, Media Coverage and the Non-Fiction Story, the American Justice System, Lending a Helping Hand when Disaster strikes and other relevant topics.

The Chestnut Street Teen Center and Mentor Connection are seeking 2 volunteers to lead an 8-week cooking group at the Chestnut Street Teen Center in Newton Upper Falls. The volunteers would work with up to 10 kids, who are eager to learn how to cook fresh, healthy and delicious foods. At the end of 8 weeks, the group will prepare a community meal to share their learnings and expertise with the larger community and their peers. The group will run from 6-8pm on Monday evenings with an estimated start date of late Sept/early Oct. This program is modeled after a highly successful cooking program we ran this spring – which focused on Italian cuisine and engaged approximately 5 kids
