Jan. 17, 2012 PTSO meeting minutes

PTSO meeting recap: approximately 25 in attendance.

PTSO announcements and welcome started the evening followed by presentation by World Languages Department Chair Nancy Marrinucci and teacher Chris Wood.

Parents/guardians explored the World Languages audio/visual lab with activities similar to those in which North students might engage.  Ms. Marrinucci and Dr. Wood also allowed time to field questions.

After the World Languages presentation PTSO business was conducted; parents were asked to review and vote on proposed PTSO by-laws changes that would 1) allow the PTSO to incorporate and 2) allow PTSO business, communications and voting to be conducted electronically.  A motion was put forward, seconded, and voted on.

All present  voted yes to allow PTSO by-laws changes.

Notes from Coffee with Principal Jen Price--September 20, 2011

NNHS is working on improved attendance, which helps with the transition from grade to grade. One hundred percent of students were promoted from 9th to 10th grade last year.

Freshman transition

Some students have trouble making wise choices about how to use their free time. This is an important life skill and the learning is developmental.

There are two X blocks/week; one purpose is to allow students to see their teachers for extra help. For the first six X blocks for 9th graders, something is scheduled so they can make good use of this time. Club Day and SOS are two examples of structured activities during X block.

9th graders are supposed to stay at North during lunch. Open campus for older students is linked to achievement; can’t go off campus is your performance is not okay.

During Arena Scheduling Day, all involved parties are in the room at the same time so it is easier than in the past for students to make corrections to their schedule. Newton North has a new scheduling person.
